Chapter 20: Interesting Leads

Iknew exactly how I was going to handle the Paula situation, but first, we had another woman to look into. Veronica clearly had a link to Pete, and we wanted to know what it was.

When we arrived at the country club, we took up a position where we could see the staff exit without being seen by ourselves. Tara’s face had a determined set that suggested that she was completely invested in what we were doing.

We talked about how she’d approach Melissa while we waited. “So, how are you going to make contact with her? Erik was saying that she rarely leaves the house.”

Tara sighed. “That will make it more difficult. Ideally, I’d like to approach her in a safe public space where she might feel comfortable building a relationship with me. It won’t happen overnight, but eventually, I’d like to work on her trusting me.”

I nodded. “It might be a good idea to watch the house for a while. Get an idea of if she goes out on a regular day and time so you can work out where to bump into her. Will you tell her you know her brother?”

“No. I don’t think that’ll help build rapport. If she thinks I’m there because of Erik, she’ll shut down. Oliver has got her conditioned to reject her family so I need to be outside of that.”

It made sense, I thought. I was just thinking about how to avoid too many direct questions about my approach with Paula when the staff door swung open, and Veronica appeared. She looked around before letting the door close behind her. Shading her eyes from the sun, she scanned the parking lot until she saw the vehicle she was looking for.

A male figure lounged against the car, watching her. Veronica didn’t have any of the self-confidence I’d seen before. She scuttled across the lot, her head ducked and her shoulders hunched over.

We followed at a safe distance. If this was Pete, he’d seen me before, and I couldn’t risk him recognizing me. Tara stood by a car and fumbled in her purse as though searching for her keys. I crouched behind the opposite side of the car where I wouldn’t be visible.

Veronica reached the man. I glanced over and I could see that his build and stance were the same as Pete’s. He grabbed Veronica’s arm in a vice-like grip and shook her hard. Her head bobbed back and forth, and he pushed his face close to hers. At that moment, I caught a clear glimpse of his snake tattoo. It was definitely Pete. I couldn’t see his face because his cap was pulled so low, but I could hear the familiar British accent as he hissed at his partner.

“You’re late, Bitch. Why are you late? What have you been doing?”

She cowered away from him, but he moved back into her personal space as he continued to throw out accusations. His voice rose, and there was a pitch of anger in it that made me fear for her safety.
